Extreme Stacking: Save $ and Earn Travel Rewards

Good morning from sweltering Texas! I sure miss Italy today...

I am shopping for comfortable walking shoes for an upcoming trip. I like ECCO Cayla Mary Janes but I sure don't like their $130 price tag, especially since every pair of shoes I buy must be altered to accommodate my longer left leg after hip surgery (long story), which adds another $70 to the cost. Here's how I purchased the shoes for a grand total of $41.66 (and free shipping).

Google search found sale price on jet.com: $63.98

Offer Code APPLE15 for 15% off (found by Honey extension on my browser): - 9.60

UPromise shopping portal 5% cashback (found by cashbackmonitor.com): - 2.72

American Express Offer on jet.com (spend $50, get $10 statement credit): - 10.00

TOTAL $41.66

Normally I would look for a discounted egift card to make this buy (I'd go through a cashback portal for that purchase, too) but since American Express currently has a jet.com offer I used my SPG Amex instead. You can check for AMEX offers at the bottom of your account page on americanexpress.com. Add them all to your cards - you never know when you might need them. They are automatically applied for you when you make a qualifying purchase - no claim forms to fill out or hoops to jump through!

Coincidentally, my SPG Business Amex is offering 2-for-1 points on spending up to $10,000 right now. Woot! SPG points are my favorite transferable currency because they can be used at a variety of travel partners and even include a 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer. They are also the only currency that transfers to American Airlines in order to redeem award flights. If you are interested in applying for this card, I'd wait until the bonus offered by Amex for new applicants goes back up to at least 30,000 SPG points. Right now it's sitting at 25,000 points for new applications.

One more thing - Discover cards are offering 5% back on Amazon.com July 1 through September 1. You have to activate the offer on discover.com.

Happy saving! I hope this post gives you some new tips and ideas to save big on your every day purchases. Every penny gets you closer to that dream trip!
